What this 5 year old girl taught me and WHY! I realised I had to change.
The benefit of having clients that you care for, is that inevitably they become friends. I had the pleasure of staying with one of my friends at his “School of Mystery” on the beautiful Island of Ko Phangan, Thailand. I know it’s a tough life, but someone has to do it, I mean a change is as good as a rest, right?
What I didn’t know was that a conversation with his 5 year old niece would completely change the way that I literally looked at the World.

Looking around you would have seen a brightly coloured painted room with a collection of trinkets and photographs from a well travelled adventurer, the structure is wooden with a back wall is made out of the rocks that are the beginning of the jungle that the room is built on the edge of.
The Indian and Thai influence is apparent in the decor of the light shades and the low eating tables with the triangle folding mat chairs as well as the almost space age juxtaposition of the silver grey, purple and blue beanbags that arrived the previous day on board a small boat (the only way to reach this secluded part of paradise)
There is a background noise coming from the kitchen area and even though it’s not audible you can feel that the lady of the house is singing inside as she is preparing a meal full of all the luxurious foods that nature can provide. She creates and serves food that has bright colours, a variety of textures and tastes that get all your senses standing to attention and eager for the next mouthful.
So what happened next?
It is in the middle of all this activity that my eyes are drawn to the Gulf of Thailand, that is the view from the balcony of the room. A clear turquoise blue sea that is gently lapping against the rocks and there is a stairway of yellow wooden steps leading to the sea.
My clients niece (who is a beautiful Cambodian girl of 5, who looks a little bit like one of those big brown eyed Japanese Manga comic characters) joins me. Leaning over the balcony she asks:
“Hey Cheryl, can you see the black fish?”
“I am looking……I can’t see any black fish”
“Cheryl, Why can’t you see the fish?”
“I’m looking but I can’t see”
At this stage my friend, Rafael joins us:
“Oh the little black fish ……yeah I can see”
WHAT!! “Oh I can see them now …I was looking for a BIG black fish”
“Well Cheryl, that’s a bit like life…many people imagine what is really there, instead of reality”
Have you ever had a light bulb moment?
It was in that moment I learned a lesson, a huge lesson.
Would you agree with me we live in a world where we are bombarded with images, information and these are instant…….our mind gets into overdrive and it is because of this overload that we can not always see the wood for the trees?
I realised that you don’t have to figure out things on your own, in fact as in this instance, you usually need someone to be honest with you, to point out what you can’t see.
In that moment I realised I’d been looking at the world all wrong…I needed to change that. Thats right in my 50’s I realised I had to start seeing, instead of looking!
So let me ask you this…..
